Carlito Set to Exit WWE as Contract Nears End, Wins Championship in Puerto Rico

WWE Superstar Carlito is reportedly on his way out of the company, as his current contract will not be renewed, according to a report from PWInsider. Once his existing deal runs its course, the 46-year-old veteran is expected to depart WWE. This news follows a similar report regarding R-Truth’s contract status with the company.

Adding another layer to his current status, Carlito competed outside of WWE just last night, wrestling for World Wrestling Council (WWC) in Puerto Rico. In a significant development, he defeated Ray Gonzalez to win the WWC Puerto Rican Championship, capturing gold in his home territory even as news of his impending WWE departure circulates.

Carlito, a member of the renowned Colon wrestling family and the son of WWE Hall of Famer Carlos Colon, first signed with WWE in 2003 under a developmental contract. During his initial, memorable run, he quickly made an impact, known for his apple-spitting antics and cool demeanor. He achieved considerable success, capturing the WWE Intercontinental Championship and the United States Championship, and also held tag team gold with his brother, Primo Colon. He was released by WWE in 2010.

After his 2010 release, Carlito worked on the independent circuit and in Puerto Rico for many years. He made a surprise appearance in the 2021 Men’s Royal Rumble match, which was well-received by fans. This eventually led to a more permanent return.

In 2023, Carlito was signed to a new WWE deal following a thunderous crowd reaction to his appearance at the WWE Backlash premium live event in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he assisted Bad Bunny. Upon his return, he was assigned to the Raw roster and later became associated with The Judgment Day faction, appearing regularly with the group.

Despite his involvement with the prominent stable, Carlito’s most recent televised match for WWE was in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, which took place during WrestleMania weekend in Las Vegas in April 2025.

With his WWE contract reportedly not being renewed, the newly crowned WWC Puerto Rican Champion will soon be a free agent in the broader wrestling landscape once again. His future plans beyond his current WWC commitments are not yet known.
