WWE Superstar Charlotte Flair has addressed comments she made during last Friday night’s SmackDown segment in Chicago involving her WrestleMania opponent, WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton. In a statement that seems to fully embrace a villainous persona, Flair offered a pointed, sarcastic apology to the notoriously vocal Chicago crowd.
The segment saw Flair and Stratton reference personal issues during their segment, as both women went off script. Now, seeking to “clear the air,” Flair issued the following statement:
“After being blindsided by my personal trauma on live television, my character said something on-air that was not true, and I’d like to take this opportunity to clear the air,” Flair wrote. “I should have NEVER called the Chicago fans smart. I sincerely apologize.”
Flair appears to be “leaning into” the situation, using the fan reaction or online buzz surrounding the segment as fuel for her character work. Instead of retracting or ignoring the potentially awkward moment, her sarcastic apology for complimenting the fans firmly positions her as antagonistic, especially leading into her championship match against Tiffany Stratton at WrestleMania 41 next weekend.
