Charlotte Flair Reveals WWE’s Unwritten Rules She Had To Follow Early In Her Career

Charlotte Flair has pulled back the curtain on some of the unwritten rules that governed WWE when she was coming up in the company. Speaking with Sam Roberts, Flair reflected on how dramatically WWE’s environment has shifted over the past decade since her main roster debut in 2015.

“I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but you had to change in a specific place. There were unwritten rules. We hadn’t main-evented WrestleMania, a pay-per-view, or Raw. You can’t compare. Now, it’s just casual. It’s not that I want people to walk on eggshells now, it’s just different,” Flair said.

She went on to detail just how specific those unwritten rules were, extending to colors, accessories, and even individual moves.

“I remember when I came up, you could not hit one move that someone else does, male or female, or wear someone’s color. You couldn’t wear red because of the Bellas or even Eva Marie at that time. You couldn’t have studs because of Paige. It’s just different. You’re just hoping, ‘I hope I can wear this,'” Flair said.

Flair made her WWE main roster debut in 2015 and has since become one of the most decorated performers in the company’s history. A 14-time World Champion, she sits just behind Ric Flair and John Cena on the all-time title wins list. Her career highlights include main-eventing WrestleMania alongside Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch.

Flair competes at WrestleMania 42 night one on April 18, teaming with Alexa Bliss in the fatal four-way Women’s Tag Team Championship match.
