Charlotte Flair has spoken about the evolution of women’s wrestling in WWE, stating her belief that she is as big of a star as any male performer in the company. Flair, a 14-time women’s world champion, has been a top star in the division’s transformation over the last decade. Speaking to Bloomberg Sports, she noted that while the women who preceded her may have felt the gender disparity more acutely, her generation was instrumental in shifting the landscape toward equal opportunity.
“When I started in a group of women that I came in with, who I champion every day… we were part of this change,” Flair explained. “In 2015, when Give Divas a Chance trended for three days, we were part of that rise where we were given the same amount of opportunities and time and segments as the men, and then ultimately myself, Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey ended up main eventing WrestleMania 35 at MetLife.”
She noted that just a year prior to that event, the idea of women main-eventing a show would have been met with laughter.
Proving Commercial and In-Ring Capability
Flair noted that the success of the current era has proven that women are capable of being top-of-the-card attractions who can sell merchandise and fill arenas.
“What we were able to create is that women are capable of selling merchandise, putting people in seats, being top of the card, getting equal opportunities in the ring,” Flair stated. “So do I feel things go like this? 100%. But do I think I’m as big a star as any male? Absolutely.”
