Chelsea Green believes the clip from Unreal in which WWE discussed her not being the one is a large part of why the crowd was behind her when she won the Interim WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam, and she says she is grateful to Michael Hayes for it.
Green won a five-way ladder match on night two in Minneapolis, beating Tiffany Stratton, Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill and Lash Legend.
Speaking to Sam Roberts on WWE Now afterward, she was asked whether the clip, which circulated widely when the first season of WWE’s documentary series aired, had rallied people to her. Green turned the question into a joke first.
“Do you think that I should dedicate my title win to old Michael Hayes?”
Then she answered it.
“Yes, yes. I have thought that since the minute that season one, episode three of Unreal came out. I thought, oh, this is not going to be good for the office, but I love it. What do you? Hello, I’m getting all this love for just being me, for doing nothing out of the ordinary, for literally just showing up to work, doing my job, and going home. Unfortunately, for the office that aired, everyone loved it, and now here we are, three seasons later.”
“I mean, like Unreal season three just came out, and it reignited that passion from the fans. Like I know it did. I know it did. I felt it. I have felt it all weekend. I have felt it all year. I felt it for three years. I really felt it when I won the U.S. title, but it has like exploded since then. Exploded. And I thank Michael Hayes for that.”
Hayes is a WWE producer and a Hall of Famer, inducted with the Fabulous Freebirds.
Roberts put it to her that she is now cheered without having altered anything about the act.
“No, that’s the best part. I have stayed exactly the same person.”
“And somehow we’ve gone on this epic journey where now they like it. When literally six months ago, not only did they hate it, but I was like the most annoying person in the company, so that just goes to show you you can’t trust Twitter. You know what I mean? Can’t trust Twitter.”
Green was released by WWE in 2021 and returned in the 2023 Royal Rumble. She won the Women’s United States Championship last year, which she cites as the point where the support started building, before Sunday’s ladder match made her champion outright.
