WWE Hall of Famer and co-host of Grilling JR Jim Ross recently appeared on Chris Jericho’s Talk is Jericho podcast. One of the topics discussed centered around Jericho’s WrestleMania 18 main event match against Triple H.
Jericho would reveal that Triple H was paid a hefty sum for that match, and Y2J would get a smaller piece of the pie. “Another interesting story that I always appreciated was when Triple H and I headlined…WrestleMania 18 was it?” Jericho began.
The former AEW Champion elaborated further, saying how he was furious about the pay disparity. “It was after The Rock and Hulk Hogan, that was THE main event, but we were on last. Then it was just a passing conversation between me and Hunter. I found out that he got four fifths of the pie of the payout from the match and I got one fifth. I was furious.”
Jericho would elaborate further, saying how JR had to placate the situation. “And you [JR] explained what Vince’s theory was. ‘When somebody’s a hot babyface that’s gonna win? People are gonna pay money to see him win. And that’s more important than the actual foe that he’s in the ring to face.'”
Jim Ross would confirm that was in fact McMahon’s mentality. “That was his, it was his rule of thumb” JR revealed. “And the other thing too that you’ve got to remember? Triple H had a unique relationship with the old man. Yeah, he’s gonna father his grandchildren! And I haven’t got a problem with that. I mean, I get it, you know? He [Vince] cared about his family in that respect.”
It was later revealed that Vince McMahon would in fact ‘rectify’ the situation, with Jericho getting a substantial cheque to make up for the ‘Mania payout.
