As we noted earlier this week, Dana White admitted that he has interest in signing former WWE Champion CM Punk. The news first broke in The Wrestling Observer newsletter on Wednesday night. White added fuel to the rumors when he told TMZ this week that he wouldn’t mind talking with CM Punk. Punk has been training at Rener Gracie’s school in Torrance, California.
On Friday said on “The Jim Rome Show” on the CBS Network that Punk will be attending tonight’s UFC 181 event in Las Vegas.
“He left the WWE for whatever reason, he’s a huge fan of the UFC, he’s been training for a few years now, and he’s interested in fighting,” White told Rome. “I’m interested in talking to him. … CM Punk is coming to the show this weekend, and we’re going to talk.”
White note that he wasn’t sure if Brock could fight when he first signed with UFC but Brock proved people wrong and won the UFC World Heavyweight title in his fourth fight.
“You never know (if he can fight) until you get in there,” White said. “I didn’t know if Brock could fight. I thought Brock was crazy for coming over here. But, the difference with Brock Lesnar is Brock was a world-class wrestler. I don’t know. We’ll see.”
White noted that Lesnar was thrown to the wolves because of his credentials as an NCAA Division 1 national wrestling champion. He said that Punk would not be treated the same way. Instead, if Punk signs with UFC, he would face a guy with a similar record to his, 0-0.
White talks about CM Punk and Brock Lesnar at the 6:05 mark.
