Cody Rhodes Days As A Babyface Are Coming To An End

During a recent interview with Kay Adams, former WWE Champion Cody Rhodes discussed his future as one of wrestling’s top fan-favorites and the possibility of an eventual character change.

When asked if he ever gets tired of being the “nice guy,” Rhodes explained his perspective on the role and its limited lifespan. “I don’t ever get tired of it, because you get to have all of this in these moments,” Rhodes said. “I do think we’re probably at the tail end of it, though, because there’s only so much someone can like you. I would love to do it till the end of my career, but there’s only so much. It’s like, ‘All right, we do as well. We cheer for them.’ At a certain point they want to see somebody else. I get that, and that’s where you have to change as a character.”

He then gave a direct timeline for how long he believes his run as a beloved babyface can last. “I think you have a good, solid year, maybe even three years,” he stated, before adding a crucial condition for any potential turn. “Because I again, I am not changing until I’m changed. If that makes any sense.”

Rhodes also provided a clear picture of what a true villainous turn would look like in today’s wrestling landscape. “You’ll know because X and Instagram will hate it,” he explained. “Because today heels are like, ‘Oh, that’s a cool heel.’ We’re loving John Cena, no. If you’re burying it and hate it and talking about how you don’t want it on your TV, that’s what an actual bad guy is.”

He also brought up his past rival, The Rock, and his potential influence on his character’s future. “If The Rock had it his way, I would have been changed already,” Rhodes said. “So I think he sees something that maybe I don’t see, and that’s a very smart individual. So maybe I follow his lead. Maybe not.”

Despite their on-screen animosity, Rhodes had nothing but praise for The Rock’s current ventures outside of the ring. “I mean, the guy’s doing… got a good series of A24 movies coming out,” he said. “As a wrestler group in the business, I’m just excited that he’s… those opportunities are there for him, and I think it’s no secret he’s been very helpful, kind of, procuring some opportunities for me as well that I never dreamed of in a million years… So I’m all for The Rock.”
