While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show this week, Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes discussed his upcoming tag team match alongside Randy Orton on Friday Night SmackDown. Rhodes shared the personal importance of the match.
Rhodes and Orton share a significant history, dating back to their time as members of the Legacy faction in the late 2000s. Though their careers took different paths, their bond has remained a key part of their individual stories. This week’s match marks a rare opportunity for the two superstars to team up.
Reflecting on the opportunity, Rhodes noted the importance of the moment, given Orton’s recent injury history and the stage he is at in his career. “It’s Randy Orton, somebody who was a mentor to me in the game. And—no spoiler—Randy is… we don’t know how much longer Randy is going to be doing this. I don’t want that to creep up on me if we didn’t get one more good old-fashioned Mega Powers-style tag with the guy who is partially responsible for me ever getting anywhere in WWE.”
By referencing the “Mega Powers,” Rhodes is comparing his and Orton’s partnership to the iconic 1980s team of Hulk Hogan and “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton are set to face Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed on the October 3, 2025, episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
Rhodes will meet World Champion Seth Rollins in a champion vs. champion match at the upcoming Crown Jewel premium live event on November 8.
