Although it was recently reported that WWE is planning a John Cena vs. Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes match at WrestleMania 41, the match has been in the works for a while.
Fightful Select reports they were told as far back as mid-November that Rhodes and Cena “was the plan, after it was indicated that the Rock’s schedule was unclear for Mania.” WWE had hoped to have Rock work Rhodes at the event as previously teased coming out of WrestleMania 40.
It was said before Rhodes made his return from injury and won the 2023 Royal Rumble there were some close to him who was actually hoping the match would take place at WrestleMania 39. Rhodes went on to fall short to Roman Reigns at Mania that year with the Undisputed WWE Title on the line.
The report noted there are WrestleMania plans for a solid portion of the WWE roster in addition to some alternate options.
