Cody Rhodes has issued a very specific and unique request regarding the dress code for his eventual funeral. The “American Nightmare” wants wrestlers in attendance to break the traditional norm of wearing black suits and instead arrive in their full ring gear. Rhodes discussed his final wishes during a recent appearance on Grave Conversations, a show where guests discuss mortality while lying in open caskets.
Speaking to host and actor David Dastmalchian, known for his roles in Late Night with the Devil and The Suicide Squad, Rhodes bonded with the host over their shared love for comic books. Rhodes specifically cited the famous DC Comics storyline Identity Crisis as the inspiration for his request.
In that story, the superhero community gathers for the funeral of Sue Dibny, with heroes wearing their costumes as a sign of respect and identity. Rhodes believes that professional wrestling possesses a similar mythology and that his peers should honor that “kayfabe” spirit even in death.
“It had one of the greatest funeral scenes of all time because all of them showed up in gimmick, full gear. When my time comes, I want the wrestling world in full gimmick. Bury me in the American Nightmare Sandra Grey robe. Bury me as I was. I spent so much time giving back to pro wrestling and taking from pro wrestling and loving that I got to play a superhero. I’d like to go out a superhero.”
Rhodes is currently in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, preparing for the Royal Rumble Premium Live Event taking place this Saturday. He is scheduled to compete in the 30-man Royal Rumble match.
