It’s very interesting to hear Rey Mysterio’s name mentioned on WWE TV in recent months. He’s been referenced on WWE.com several times as well and JBL even gave a shout out to Rey during the Royal Rumble. That is not a coincidence and, as most fans know by now, Vince McMahon is in the ear of the announcers so nothing gets on the air without approval from the boss.
Last week on his podcast, Konnan said that Mysterio would consider going back to WWE if he could get a reduced schedule. He doesn’t want a full-time schedule because he doesn’t like missing out on moments with his family and he’s at the point where he wants to cherish these final years with his kids before they move out on their own.
Mysterio has done several interviews where he has been very open to a WWE return. Back in August, he said this to Sports Illustrated: “I didn’t leave on bad terms. I left on good terms with WWE, so I don’t want to say never. They treated me very well, and I’m nothing but thankful with that company for letting Rey Mysterio be Rey Mysterio and be recognized worldwide. If the opportunity comes about in the future, and there is interest from both parties, then why not?”
What is notable about that quote is that he pushed so hard to get out of his contract with WWE and he’s already talking about a possible return to the company so that should be an indication of how things have gone downhill with AAA and Lucha Underground. Dave Meltzer discussed this on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio. He noted that AAA and LU were banking on Alberto Del Rio and Mysterio to be their big stars and the fact that Del Rio went back to WWE and Mysterio is willing to go back to WWE is extremely telling.
Konnan has been very clear that he’s pretty much out of the loop when it comes to booking and being an agent in AAA. If that wasn’t enough, Pro Wrestling Sheet reports that Mysterio and AAA are in a contract dispute because he is owed money. This would explain why Mysterio has not appeared on a AAA show since late 2015.
If I was Vince McMahon, I would get Mysterio on the roster ASAP and book him in a program in time for WrestleMania. They need as many names as possible for that show.
Konnan, who was at AAA’s tapings on Saturday night, announced on twitter that he would be holding a press conference soon so more details could be on the way.
