Darren Young: “I sacrificed my career so others can live their authentic selves”

Darren Young was the first openly gay WWE Superstar in the history of the company. Young came out of the closet while with WWE during an interview with TMZ. Young was initially signed by WWE in 2005  and spent several years in their developmental territory. After working in Florida Championship Wrestling, Young was called up to the main roster in 2010 as a member of the Nexus.

After the faction’s run ended, Young began a singles career which briefly involved WWE Hall Of Famer Bob Backlund serving as his manager. However, in 2017 Young was released from his WWE contract. He spent most of 2018 doing a lot of speaking engagements, but plans on wrestling more in 2019, and hopes to do work with the likes of Ring Of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Recently, Young was interviewed by Wrestling Inc. to talk about his professional wrestling career. During the interview, Young made an interesting comment. He said that he “sacrificed” his career in order for others to be able to live their authentic lives. Here’s what he had to say:

“I came out and I made a sacrifice. I sacrificed my career so others can live their authentic selves. Like I said, I’m going to be that superhero no matter what. I’m not going anywhere.”
