Hager made the announcement during Ariel Helwani’s MMA show and he said that he would be facing JW Kiser on January 26. Kiser has a 1-1 record and made his MMA debut earlier this year in Kansas City.
Swagger is a former WWE World Champion but spent most of his time in mid and undercard matches and was never given a sustained push as a top guy. He left the company in 2017 and later announced his intentions to fight professionally.
During the interview with Helwani, Hager said that he might not fight under his legal name if certain legal filings can be completed on time. For what it’s worth, it doesn’t look like WWE owns the “Jack Swagger” trademark. The name is currently trademarked to someone in Minneapolis, MN. Working out a deal with a third-party for ownership is much easier than working with WWE so that might be what he was referring to in his interview.
