On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, veteran journalist Dave Meltzer gave his unreserved praise to former WWE Women’s Champion IYO SKY, calling her the “best wrestler in the company right now” following her match against Roxanne Perez on Monday Night Raw.
“The Best Wrestler in the Company”
While reviewing the match, which was a late addition to the show after Naomi was not medically cleared, Meltzer was effusive in his praise for SKY’s in-ring work. “I mean, she’s the best wrestler in the company right now, and… I think easily as far as week in, week out, who’s better, who’s better than her?,” he stated. “As far as singles, who’s better? I mean, there’s not a lot. There’s no way.”
A “Really Good Match” with a Scary Moment
Meltzer called the match between SKY and Perez a “really good match,” but he did single out one terrifying moment that almost ended in disaster. “They did that moonsault spot, though, oh, my God… It looked like it killed her,” he said of SKY’s signature move. “So IYO was supposed to do a moonsault. She was supposed to get her feet up, but IYO completely missed the feet, and kneed her right in… It looked to me like she kneed her right in the face or in the jaw or in the throat.”
A Program with Asuka?
The match ended after interference from SKY’s Kabuki Warriors tag team partner, Asuka, and Kairi Sane. After the match, a frustrated SKY got into an argument with her partners, with Asuka shoving her before walking off. Meltzer noted that this angle is likely leading to a long-awaited program between the two Japanese superstars. “They’ve been wanting to do IYO against Asuka as a program for years,” he said.
Vince’s Blind Spot
Co-host Bryan Alvarez added, “It’s funny that Vince [didn’t get] that people would like to see Japanese women’s wrestling … IYO is one of the most over people… not just the women… every match she has, they absolutely love her.”
