Diamond Dallas Page revealed on the Wrestling Life with Ben Veal podcast that Lex Luger recently underwent a cardiac ablation procedure for atrial fibrillation, the same heart condition DDP himself has dealt with.
“We both had afib, which means that your heart’s racing, slowing down, racing. You’re going up and down,” DDP said. “And had to have it. It’s called an articular, a cardio ablation. And they take these, I don’t know what the hell you’d call them instruments, and they put them up your groin, up into your vein, all the way up into your heart. I don’t know what genius invented that. And they electrocute your heart to get it back on track.”
DDP said he connected Luger with the same doctor who performed his own procedure. “I had the number one guy who worked on me, and I got him to work on Lex.”
Luger traveled from Alabama to DDP’s property in Florida this week to begin working out together again. DDP said neither man was able to lift anything or exercise for months following their respective procedures.
“Lex hasn’t really worked out like workout with me in two months, because you had to get through, you had to go to the ablation. It’s been three months, and then you got it, you know, they put the paddles on you, and hopefully that resets your heart so they get in there and not have your heart going up and down,” DDP said. “I’m finally back on track to where I’m about 85 to 90%. He will see when we work out. But he came in from Alabama today to spend a couple of days with me and work with me.”
Luger’s Ongoing Mobility Challenges
DDP also discussed Luger’s ongoing physical limitations dating back to the spinal cord injury that left him a quadriplegic years ago. DDP said Luger had regained enough mobility to use a walker and then a cane, but a fall set him back.
“He basically said that he’d stop doing the things. He said he got cocky and he stopped doing the things that I showed him,” DDP recalled. “And he was, he wasn’t wanting to use the cane. His ego would go like I started to walk without it, and I hit a pothole. Boom, I went down, and I’ve been in the chair ever since.”
DDP said Luger approached him again at Sting’s final match in Charlotte and committed to resuming their work together. “Man, I’ll do whatever you want me to do. I’ll do it,” Luger told him. “I think this could really help me.”
DDP said the plan had been for Luger to walk across the stage at last year’s WWE Hall of Fame with his hand on DDP’s shoulder, but an Uber driver failed to hold Luger’s wheelchair steady as he exited the vehicle, causing another fall. Combined with the afib diagnosis, they are now starting over.
“So now we’re starting over again and see where we’re at, see what he can do, what he can’t do,” DDP said.
