As we wrote about earlier, there were several changes made to the WrestleMania 35 card over the last few months.
Roman Reigns being sidelined with leukemia, Jim Neidhart’s passing affecting plans for Natalya’s heel turn, injuries, and other things played a part in some of the top matches being changed.
Several weeks ago, we reported here on WrestlingNews.co that the plan at one point was for Roman Reigns to wrestle Dean Ambrose. As recently as of a few weeks ago, I was told that there was a push by some to have Ambrose turn on Reigns at Fastlane or on the following night. Dave Meltzer said in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Reigns vs. Ambrose was actually the plan before Reigns’ leukemia diagnosis.
Reigns vs. Ambrose would have been the main event (or one of the main events) and Reigns would have probably been the Universal Champion.
Lesnar was not in going to be in the Universal Championship picture because he was threatening to go to UFC or he was using them as leverage against Vince Mcmahon. Lesnar ultimately decided to take a big money offer from WWE and that is when they put the title on him and it was later decided that it would be Rollins challenging Lesnar for the title.
