Details on the issues with Vince McMahon that led to Road Dogg stepping down as SmackDown co-head writer

In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there are more details on “Road Dogg” Brian James’ decision to step down as co-head writer on SmackDown Live. He was co-head writer with Steve Guerrieri.

James was splitting his time between his home in Pensacola, Florida and skyping into meetings that would take place all night. Dave Meltzer noted that sometimes he would have to fly up to the headquarters in Stamford, CT to attend meetings that would last late into the night and into the early morning.

The belief within WWE is that he became frustrated with putting in all of those hours in each week, only to have Vince McMahon come in and change things at the production meeting on the day of the show.

Another story that has come out is that McMahon dressed down James on multiple occasions about continuity issues on the show. The last few days and weeks were hard on James and it’s difficult for him to mask his frustrations so McMahon would ride him hard for that.

It’s unclear what James’ role will be with the company moving forward but an agent/producer role would seem like the next logical step.
