Did Roman Reigns turn heel at Great Balls Of Fire?

After last night’s WWE Great Balls Of Fire PPV where babyfaces lost every single match one has to wonder what WWE has up their sleeves. The truth is SummerSlam is a very complicated monster and it’s obviously still taking shape. Dave Meltzer said on the Wrestling Observer Radio after Great Balls Of Heel Wins that WWE still has Roman Reigns pegged to go against Brock Lesnar for the Universal Title at SummerSlam.

The babyfaces might have lost every match but that is why fans saw those instances of high spots to get their heat back. In Sasha Banks’ case, it was performing a nice double knee drop from the announce table onto the floor where Alexa Bliss stood waiting for her. In Roman Reigns’ case, he pretty much committed theft of an emergency vehicle, attempted vehicular homicide, and leaving the scene of an accident. They might say Everything’s Bigger In Texas but those spots were plenty feisty, to say the least.

The ultimate question was asked if Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman pulled off a double-turn last night. Braun left looking like a babyface and Roman Reigns like a felon. But Meltzer said this occurrence doesn’t necessarily mean a double-turn because WWE is beginning to shift their focus on the top of the card.

WWE is no longer looking at their top names as faces and heels, they’re just the main event level guys. If they can stick with this, then that might be the trick they need to end some of the frustration people have about the top of the card. John Cena and Roman Reigns have taught them that they can push someone as a babyface on television, but it’s still okay to have babyface vs babyface matches in theory. Even though the crowd might have a “thunderous reaction” the opposite way WWE wants them to, it’s okay at this point.

So when Roman Reigns smashed that ambulance into a trailer and nearly killed another human being it wasn’t a heel turn, it was just something a babyface does. Meltzer said WWE can book segments where characters seem like they’re playing the other side of the fence like with Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman but they’re not making a turn. When you’re in the main event it’s just going to consist of back-and-forth booking and if you look like a heel when you’re a babyface it doesn’t matter.

In the end, WWE’s business is still fine and that’s the way they’re doing it now. One thing is for sure it might make for some more entertaining television.
