I’m sure WWE had to be expecting this. WWE said earlier today that they would continue offering their pay-per-view events on cable but did mention the possibility of being dropped by pay-per-view companies.
Obviously, the WWE Network changes alot of things and will take a huge chunk of revenue away from cable companies. The Los Angeles Times has a story on the network. DirecTV released the following statement today:
“Clearly, we need to quickly re-evaluate the economics and viability of their business with us, as it now appaers the WWE feels they do not need their PPV distributors.”
While this could be a huge step forward for WWE, there are many risks and losing pay-per-view is going to force them to do everything in their power to make this network work for them because they may never be able to generate PPV revenue again.
