Drew McIntyre addresses whether he poked fun at botched AEW match finish during Raw promo

Drew McIntyre got fans talking when he did a promo on this past Monday’s episode of Raw where he addressed MVP. Some fans thought he was taking a shot at AEW when he brought up how MVP made some guarantees and how it’s such a dangerous thing to do in wrestling because if “you make a guarantee and don’t deliver, fans get upset and sparks fly.”

The Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch between World Champion Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley was heavily promoted in advance of the AEW Revolution pay-per-view event. There was supposed to be a big explosion at the end of the match, but it was a botched ending. Omega had issued a lengthy statement last week about the lackluster conclusion.

McIntyre explained in an interview with Alfred Konuwa of Forbes that his comments were not targeted towards AEW. He said that he had no idea what he was going to say in the promo and just spoke from his heart.

He started thinking about what he could guarantee after hearing MVP say it, which was how he and Sheamus will beat the crap out of each other at Fastlane.

McIntyre continued by noting that after he said ‘sparks fly,’ he didn’t think twice about it until he came backstage and someone came up to him and said, ‘I saw what you did there.’ ‘What did I do?’ And then they played it out to me and I went ‘oh, yeah, that could be taken that way,’” said McIntyre.

The former WWE Champion added, “Maybe subconsciously I made a joke…I don’t like that shot back-and-forth stuff, I don’t see the point, it’s not good for business.”
