WWE star Drew McIntyre has confirmed he is currently “working hurt” following a dangerous spot at the Backlash premium live event.
During the Fatal 4-Way match for the United States Championship (won by Jacob Fatu), McIntyre was involved in a brawl with Damian Priest that spilled into the crowd. The confrontation culminated when Priest delivered a ‘South of Heaven Chokeslam’ to McIntyre off a platform. McIntyre missed the intended table and reportedly hit his head on the floor.
McIntyre’s new interview with Jay Reddick of the Orlando Sentinel detailed his current physical state. “I can’t turn my head all the way left yet…” he revealed.
McIntyre elaborated on the realities of competing with injuries: “Working hurt is just what happens if you’re an athlete, especially as the years go by. If you’re injured, it is something to take care of. Maybe back in the day, we would have taped it up and gone with it.”
He acknowledged his past willingness to compete through significant injuries but noted the shift in WWE’s approach: “In the past, I have worked with muscle tears and breaks, which isn’t the most sensible thing, but the way we operate now, you want to last for the long run.”
McIntyre will work a steel cage match against Priest at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
