WWE will have another Clash at the Castle event, with Drew McIntyre headlining once again, but he hopes to change history.
Fans were surprised to see Roman Reigns retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship over Drew McIntyre in the main event of the Clash at the Castle event in 2022, as the show had been built around McIntyre, and there was a report ahead of the event that WWE was considering taking at least one of Roman’s titles off him.
WWE stayed with its long-term plan with Reigns as a top guy and champion instead of going for the big pop McIntyre would’ve received from the fans in attendance. After the match, McIntyre sang with Tyson Fury, which was not supposed to air on the broadcast, according to former WWE writer Freddie Prinze, Jr.
McIntyre reflected on the end of the match while speaking with Inside The Ropes.
McIntyre stated, “Yeah, I genuinely hated it. It was the biggest moment and match of my life, up until it wasn’t. It was so perfect until it wasn’t. Getting the PLE, finally, after 30 years in the stadium in the UK since SummerSlam ’92, getting the main event fighting Roman when he was at the point where he was just on fire and people were cheering him even though he was the bad guy, and having that in my head like, “It probably be 70:30 me,” because, you know, Bret [Hart] vs. [British] Bulldog, just because how popular Roman is. But hearing the crowd, hearing 100% in my corner, feeling like this is it, this is the night that it should happen. Taking out the whole Bloodline and then Solo appears, the finish happens and just feeling the energy literally drain out the room. Feeling like everyone felt like they got stabbed through the freaking heart it was soul-crushing, and then trying to sing the stupid song with Tyson to try and lift the spirits a bit. People were trying to join in and sing along, but it just wasn’t it. Sometimes even in football matches your team loses and you leave dejected, I should have just left how I felt, p**sed off. We’re going to fix that this Saturday, though.”
McIntyre will challenge Damian Priest for the World Heavyweight Title at today’s event.
