WWE Champion Drew McIntyre recently spoke with BT Sport, which released an excerpt of the interview in a video on Twitter.
In this clip, McIntyre reveals how he was originally scheduled to face The Undertaker at WrestleMania 26 in 2010. However, the match was nixed due to him not being ready. WWE went with a rematch between Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker at the show. It should be noted that WrestleMania 26 served as Michaels’ retirement match as they had just worked the previous WrestleMania.
McIntyre started out by talking about how in his first WWE stint, Vince McMahon told him to only listen to The Undertaker about wrestling advice.
“The inevitable goal was to have a big match between him and I. Unfortunately, I wasn’t ready at the time. Things worked out the way it worked out. I believe it led to, instead of myself and Undertaker, Shawn Michaels and Undertaker, the retirement match, which was obviously a phenomenal match. I could not have delivered on that level at the time.”
McIntyre then moved along to how he worked a tag team match with the former WWE champion after Taker’s match with Goldberg in Saudi Arabia. He put over Taker for working a good match and looking great despite the issues that he faced in Saudi Arabia.
“He was very happy after the fact. I think I may have dropped into conversation about there’s a certain match I was promised about 10 years ago.”
McIntyre added that winning the WWE Title, which he’s done, and wrestling The Undertaker were some of his goals when he returned to the company a few years ago.
