Fans were surprised to see Roman Reigns retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship over Drew McIntyre in the main event of the Clash at the Castle 2022 event, and so was McIntyre.
The show had been built around McIntyre, with most fans thinking he would go over it, especially since it was reported ahead of the event that WWE was considering taking at least one of Roman’s titles off him. However, that didn’t happen as WWE stayed with its long-term plan with Reigns as the champion instead of going for the big pop McIntyre would’ve received from the fans in attendance. After the match, McIntyre sang with Tyson Fury, which was not supposed to air on the broadcast.
While speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, McIntyre noted it was a tough night for him and called singing with Fury the most embarrassing moment of his career.
“You look at certain moments, and in the moment when you’re living them, you’re like, ‘This is ridiculous. We should have found a way out of this. [Austin] Theory could have cashed in, and I could have pinned him,’ because we had to protect The Bloodline and Roman at that time. So it’s the top story in the company, the top character. And perhaps at that time, I was like, ‘Just feel this is a bad move.’ The thing with Tyson Fury. That was stupid. There’s no excuse for that. That’s the worst moment in my entire career. We did the bit, the song, and then I told him, ‘Hey, you want to sing Sweet Caroline,’ because British fans one, they’re upset. I just lost. Two, they don’t know American Pie. He was like, ‘Nah, I’m not gonna fight here.’…….And I figured we’re off the air. That’s what I started doing Oasis bit and singing…..just got the crowd going. And I was like, ‘Ah, this sucks, but we’re off the air.’ Then I found out we were still on the air, and it was a whole thing.”
