Eric Bischoff had big plans for Sheamus during his brief stint on WWE’s creative team, and they involved a significant character overhaul.
Speaking on 83 Weeks, Bischoff shared that when he came into WWE as a SmackDown creative director in 2019, Sheamus was one of the first people to reach out to him. The two hit it off, and Sheamus was eager to talk about his character.
“I loved his character. I love the idea of Sheamus. I love the Sheamus character, but I was tired of seeing the parody of the typical Irish character,” Bischoff said.
Bischoff felt that the animated, stereotypical presentation had run its course and that there was far more to tap into with the star.
“I saw so much more in him. I would have made his character more relatable and current,” Bischoff said. “I felt like the kind of animated, typical badass Irish guy had been done to death.”
Bischoff clarified that he would not have changed everything about the character, just the more cartoonish elements.
“I would have liked to have seen Sheamus come back with the same attitude, the same motivations, the same points of view on things, but in a less animated kind of lucky charms type characterization,” Bischoff said.
The proposed revamp never came to be, as Bischoff’s WWE creative run was short-lived.
