Samoa Joe is finally getting his run at the top of the roster and he’s impressing a lot of people on his way up. The recent angle where Samoa Joe ambushed Brock Lesnar and wrapped in the Coquina Clutch was not only intense but it made Joe look incredibly strong. Brock tried to fight Joe off the best he could, but the Samoan Submission Machine was more than hungry to take the Beast Incarnate down.
Eric Bischoff spoke very highly of this current story on a recent episode of his podcast Bischoff On Wrestling. When the subject was brought up, Eric was quick to praise the segment.
“I did see it” Bischoff said about Samoa Joe choking out Lesnar. “I’m such a fan of Joe’s. I thought it was awesome to be honest with you. I think the fact that they had Joe choke Brock out made Joe credible. It created a mystique and that’s one of the things that’s hardest to do in today’s wrestling environment because we’ve seen so much. And I’ve talked ad nauseam about the WWE formula and it works for them and that’s great.”
“But we haven’t seen a lot of mystique in new characters in a long time. We’ve seen a lot of new characters, we’ve seen a lot of great new characters. And there are characters that I really, really dig that are on the younger side of the equation but none of them have mystique. That little kind of unknown quality that just creates a level of anticipation because you don’t know what’s gonna come next. And Joe is such a great character, he brings such great intensity to the ring — always has at least in the years that I worked with him.”
“He’s believable and obviously [what he did with] Brock, it goes without saying — he’s believable. So I think that the fact that they made the commitment to Joe’s character, I’m a big fan of commitment to a character. And they let Joe look strong and created a mystique and made believable and credible, I think is gonna go a long way to probably give Brock some of the better matches he’s had in a long time.”
