It will be interesting to see how much coverage WWE will get from ESPN for SummerSlam this year. Jonathan Coachman has been pushing WWE fans to contact ESPN with the idea of covering the show as a major sporting event. There are some at ESPN that believe that WWE is hot. What they don’t know is that ratings for their weekly TV shows have fallen to record lows in recent weeks.
There is pressure on ESPN (in general, not because of WWE) because cord cutting is not helping their revenue. There are others at ESPN that are against covering WWE because of the feeling that it’s not a sport. ESPN has done features on WWE before and there was a feature done on Tuesday featuring John Cena, Triple H, and Stephanie McMahon visiting a Make-A-Wish kid at a recent Raw show.
There was more ESPN coverage this year for WWE during WrestleMania week but they lucked into some of it because of the attention surrounding Brock Lesnar’s decision to sign with WWE over UFC.
