The upcoming World Heavyweight Championship match between the legendary Goldberg and the dominant champion Gunther has been a polarizing topic, and the panel on a recent Busted Open Radio had a lively debate about the booking.
Why Bring Goldberg Back?
Host Dave LaGreca questioned the business sense behind the match if it doesn’t result in a massive success. “You brought Goldberg back, why?” LaGreca asked. “If you’re only bringing him back for one match, it’s to pop a rating and to pop attendance. Well, right now they’re not sold out… if you’re not going to get a huge rating and you’re not going to get a sold out crowd, then why’d you bring Goldberg back?”
A Shocking Proposition
Guest panelist Bishop Dyer offered a simple, if mischievous, solution that would guarantee a reaction. “Put the title on him, baby. Let’s go,” Dyer said with a laugh. “Just to irritate everyone. I mean, this is… I’m a naturally, I’m a bad guy.” He later imagined the fan meltdown, saying, “Goldberg winning the title… you imagine the meltdown people are going to have.”
Tommy Dreamer even offered a fantasy booking scenario where Goldberg wins, only to be immediately challenged by Jey Uso. “If he’s the one who beats the guy who beat the guy that beat him,” Dreamer theorized, “this is now your new crown guy.”
The World Heavyweight Championship match between Gunther and Goldberg is scheduled to main event the Saturday Night’s Main Event premium live event this Saturday on NBC/Peacock. The match is being billed as the final one in Goldberg’s Hall of Fame career.
