As we noted earlier this evening, WWE Backstage appears to be done for good. PWInsider was told that the door is open for special episodes at some point but nothing is in the plans right now and the show appears to be done.
The news broke via John Ourand from Sports Business Journal. He noted that Fox Sports would be scaling down the weekly production of boxing and WWE programming
FOX Sports issued the following statement to Post Wrestling on their decision to pull WWE Backstage from weekly production:
“Today, we announced programming changes designed to better address the needs of our business. As a result, some positions in our production department have been eliminated.”
CM Punk was brought on board a few months ago to help boost the ratings for the show but they never got over 200,000 viewers since their 11 pm debut last November and several shows drew less than 100,000 viewers.
WWE gave their blessing to FOX to hire Punk for the show but there were people in management not too thrilled with Punk taking shots at WWE on social media and the company stopped promoting his appearances during Raw and SmackDown.
Tuesday’s episode of Backstage will be a rerun.
FS1 is scaling back production on its boxing and WWE shoulder programming. "WWE Backstage will not longer be produced weekly. It is eliminating "Inside PBC." Double digit job losses as a result. SBJ Media will have the full story tonight.
