The Godfather Recalls Backstage Smoke Session With Snoop Dogg At WWE Raw In 1999

During a recent reunion of Nation of Domination members on “Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw,” a detailed, multi-perspective account was given of a legendary backstage encounter involving Charles “The Godfather” Wright, music icon Snoop Dogg, and the then-sitting Governor of Minnesota, Jesse Ventura. The incident, which took place at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, was recounted by The Godfather, D’Lo Brown, and John Bradshaw Layfield.

The story began when The Godfather, who was backstage preparing for the show, was approached by WWE personnel with an unusual request regarding Snoop Dogg. “That’s the first time I met him,” The Godfather began. “And they came to me and said, ‘Hey, Snoop, don’t feel good. He doesn’t want to do this. He doesn’t have any weed. Do you have any?’ I’m like, Okay.”

Following the request, The Godfather went into a small locker room with Snoop Dogg for approximately an hour. The effect on the backstage area was immediate and widespread. D’Lo Brown, who was there, described the scene: “And we get there and Snoop finds his way in and then within 10 minutes, the entire bowl, the volume bowl of the Allstate, is lit up.” Brown also noted that Vince and Stephanie McMahon walked in at that moment.

John Bradshaw Layfield recounted how he was alerted to the situation by fellow superstar Kane. “Kane is there… and he’s like, it’s like he’s watching a car wreck,” JBL said. “He goes, ‘dude, come here’… And I walk over here, I go, ‘Oh, my God,’ the whole… place reeked.”

The situation grew more surreal due to the presence of Jesse Ventura, who at the time was the active Governor of Minnesota and was backstage with a Secret Service detail. The smoke from the locker room had created a visible “fog” in the hallway just as Ventura exited an adjacent room. JBL described the Governor’s memorable reaction: “He walks out to get his catering… and he walks out and gets his catering. Goes, ‘Well, the boys are still the boys,’ and just walks right back.”

Despite the high-profile guests and the conspicuous nature of the activity—which JBL noted involved “blunts… big old things”—The Godfather stated that he never faced any repercussions from WWE management for the incident. “The funny thing is, I never heard one word about it from anybody,” he said. “Nobody said anything to me about it.”
