WWE Hall of Famer The Godfather recently discussed the history of the Nation of Domination, including the original, diverse lineup and the much-debated inclusion of Owen Hart. On his “Poddin’ Ain’t Easy” podcast, he explained that the group was initially designed not to be too controversial and that no one in the faction knew why Owen was added, though they had their theories.
When asked about the early members of the group, The Godfather confirmed the original lineup was intentionally diverse to temper any potential controversy. “At first, when they started that, Vince didn’t want it to be too powerful, and he didn’t want it to be as powerful as it got,” he explained. “He didn’t want to offend too many people. So at first the Nation involved a Puerto Rican [Savio Vega], a white guy, a Hawaiian [Crush], a black guy [Faarooq], some rappers [PG-13].”
As the group evolved and became more serious, the lineup changed into the more well-known version. However, the addition of the late Owen Hart, a white Canadian wrestler, to the predominantly black faction remains a point of confusion even for the members themselves.
“Even back then, I still don’t understand why Owen Hart was in the nation,” The Godfather admitted. “Nobody, I talked to D’Lo, I talked to everybody, nobody has no idea.”
He then shared the prevailing theory among the members of the group, which he credited to his former stablemate, D’Lo Brown. “I think Vince did it just to piss off white people,” he said.
Despite the creative decision being a mystery to them, The Godfather made it clear that there was never any issue with Owen being in the group because of how beloved he was by everyone in the locker room. “You know what? We all liked Owen so much… that nobody gave a [damn] because it was Owen,” he stated. “The great thing about it is none of us gave a [damn]. We all loved Owen… We were happy to have him.”
