Following his retirement match against GUNTHER on July 12, WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg has reflected on the experience, giving significant credit to WWE’s Chief Content Officer, Triple H, for making his final bout happen. This is a change from Goldberg’s previous statements about the match and being upset with how it went.
Goldberg Gives ‘One Thousand Percent’ Credit To Triple H
Despite previously expressing frustration with some production aspects of his farewell, Goldberg was effusive in his praise for Levesque in an interview with the Boston Herald.
“I couldn’t have done any of that on Saturday night without [Triple H],” said Goldberg. “That’s the truth, one thousand percent.”
A Long Road To A Final Match
Goldberg revealed that the retirement match was the fulfillment of a promise made by Vince McMahon. He explained that he had been battling COVID before his match with Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber in 2022, and only agreed to do the match if McMahon would grant him a proper retirement match in the future. Reflecting on his career, Goldberg expressed his gratitude.
“I never thought a Jewish boy from Tulsa, Oklahoma would ever hear his name chanted all over the world,” said Goldberg. “I didn’t do it alone – the help I got was immeasurable… I’m greatly appreciative that so many people were happy with what they saw.”
Goldberg’s final match saw him challenge the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, GUNTHER. With the legendary victory behind him, GUNTHER now looks ahead to his next major title defense at SummerSlam, where he is scheduled to face the new number one contender, CM Punk.
