World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER has opened up about the “surreal” experience of defeating John Cena in his retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The “Ring General” retained his title and officially ended the in-ring career of the 16-time World Champion in Washington, D.C., closing the book on one of the most storied careers in wrestling history.
Appearing on TMZ Inside The Ring, GUNTHER reflected on the magnitude of the moment. He admitted that the significance of the match is still sinking in, acknowledging that he was entrusted with a responsibility by WWE.
“It’s hard to grasp, to be honest,” GUNTHER said. “It’s been a very fast 48 hours. But looking back at it…it was arguably the biggest match in history.”
GUNTHER praised Cena’s legacy, calling him the “biggest superstar” the industry has ever seen. He expressed his gratitude for being chosen as the final opponent for the future Hall of Famer.
“I think John Cena is the biggest superstar there has ever been in our industry, and to be the one to end that is a huge privilege, but also a huge responsibility,” GUNTHER said. “I take that very seriously. I think we went out there and gave the audience the match that the occasion deserved.”
Following the emotional bout, GUNTHER was seen sharing a private moment with Cena in the ring. When asked what he said to the legend, GUNTHER revealed that he kept it simple and respectful.
“I said thank you,” GUNTHER said. “I think that’s the only appropriate thing to say in that situation.”
GUNTHER is currently waiting to see who will step up to challenge him next. WWE is now on the road to the Royal Rumble Premium Live Event, which takes place on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
