Gunther Vs. Seth Rollins At WWE WrestleMania Was Not A Unanimous Creative Decision

The Seth Rollins versus Gunther match for WrestleMania 42 was only finalized the week before the March 30 episode of Raw and was not a unanimous decision within WWE’s creative team, according to Wrestlevotes Radio on Fightful Select.

Rollins recently returned from a shoulder injury that had kept him sidelined since the fall of 2025. Upon his return, Gunther attacked him on Raw, setting up what became the WrestleMania match. However, the booking decision behind how that confrontation was arranged came together at the last minute and generated internal debate about the right direction for both performers.

According to Fightful, some members of the creative team wanted Rollins to continue with the Vision storyline rather than pivot to a match with Gunther. Others were primarily motivated by a desire to get Gunther onto the WrestleMania card in some capacity following the collapse of his previously expected match with Bron Breakker, who was ultimately held back from a Rollins program to allow for proper television build time despite being medically cleared.

The report also notes that Paul Heyman is not expected to be in Gunther’s corner for the WrestleMania match, leaving the nature of the affiliation between the two that has been teased on recent programming somewhat ambiguous heading into the show.

Rollins versus Gunther joins a stacked WrestleMania 42 card that also features CM Punk defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Roman Reigns on Night 2. WrestleMania 42 takes place April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
