Gunther Talks Signing With WWE: ‘I Never Expected It To Fit That Well As It Does’

Gunther has admitted he never envisioned himself joining WWE, saying he always believed his career path led to Japan. The World Heavyweight Champion, who recently retired John Cena at Saturday Night’s Main Event, reflected on his journey during an appearance on The Ringer Wrestling Show.

“I never saw myself in WWE. I always thought I would, yeah, if things go well, I work in Japan, and that’s my jam, and that’s where I fit. That never happened, really,” Gunther said. “Yeah, now we’re here. So it’s like, hard to predict. You should never like cancel anything out in your life when it comes to like possibilities and stuff like that.”

Gunther acknowledged having doubts about whether his style and persona would translate to the WWE product. However, he has since found a comfortable position by providing a unique contrast to the rest of the roster.

“I never expected it to fit that well as it does. But here we are,” Gunther stated. “And I think as long as I can be here and be a good contrast to everybody else and provide something different, I think that’s why it fits. And as long as I can do it, I think I’m going to have a good position here.”

He also touched on the reaction to his victory over Cena, noting that he enjoyed being booed by the crowd after forcing the legend to submit.
