Gunther Will Make History At WWE WrestleMania 40

Gunther is just days away from making his next defense as the Intercontinental Champion when he steps into the squared circle at WWE WrestleMania 40 next weekend from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Gunther is slated to defend the title against Sami Zayn, who earned the title bout a few weeks ago on Monday Night Raw with a win in a gauntlet match. At last year’s WrestleMania 39, he defended the title against Drew McIntyre and Sheamus in a triple threat match.

Gunther became the Intercontinental Champion by defeating Ricochet for the title. He surpassed the record for the longest reign with the Intercontinental Championship this past September, where he broke The Honky Tonk Man’s record, which had stood for 35 years.

WWE Stats noted that Gunther will make history by joining just four other stars when they earn the right to say they defended the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania multiple years in a row. Randy Savage did it in 1986 and 1987, followed by Ultimate Warrior in 1989 and 1990.

The Rock made history in 1997 and 1998. Now, Gunther will do it.
