Gunther’s WWE WrestleMania 42 Status Uncertain After Injury Derails Planned Program

Gunther’s WWE WrestleMania 42 status is currently unclear after a rib injury to Rey Mysterio derailed a planned program between the two that was set to culminate at the event, according to Bodyslam.

According to the report, Gunther’s feud with Dragon Lee on Raw was designed to set up a match with Mysterio heading into WrestleMania 42. Mysterio’s rib injury, which occurred before the Royal Rumble, forced WWE to change course, and Gunther’s direction for the show has not been determined since. It is currently unknown whether Gunther will compete at WrestleMania 42 unless Mysterio is medically cleared in time.

Mysterio confirmed in a recent interview that he fractured both his left and right ribs on the January 26 episode of Raw during a match against Austin Theory. Despite the injury, Mysterio competed in the Men’s Royal Rumble match in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the following week and has not been seen on WWE television since.

Gunther was last seen on the March 2 episode of Raw, where he defeated Dragon Lee. Over the past year, he has been involved in several high-profile career-ending moments, retiring Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles in separate segments or matches. Those moments earned him the nickname the Career Killer and elevated his standing  in the company.

Gunther held the Intercontinental Championship for a record 666 days before losing it to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 39. He has since been positioned as a main eventer with multiple world title reigns.

WrestleMania 42 takes place April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. WWE has not made any official announcement regarding Gunther’s status for the event.
