A new report has clarified the contract status of El Hijo del Vikingo following WWE’s acquisition of AAA. According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider Elite, Vikingo is signed directly to WWE, distinguishing his deal from the rest of the AAA roster.
The report details the unique ownership structure of AAA following the purchase, which was first announced during WrestleMania 41 weekend in April 2025. While WWE, a subsidiary of TKO Group Holdings, acquired a 51% controlling stake in the Mexican promotion, the remaining 49% is owned by Fillip, a Mexico-based sports and entertainment holding company.
Johnson notes that the majority of the AAA roster is contracted directly to Fillip, which co-owns the holding company that controls the promotion alongside TKO. Vikingo, however, stands as an exception, having secured a contract directly with WWE itself. This move aligns with earlier reports from May 2025 that identified Vikingo as a key signing for WWE as part of the acquisition.
Vikingo’s direct signing has already manifested in his booking. Since the acquisition, he has appeared on WWE programming, including a match against Chad Gable at Worlds Collide on June 7, 2025, where he successfully defended the AAA Mega Championship. He most recently became the #1 contender for the AAA Mega Championship again on the January 17, 2026, episode of AAA TV, setting up future storylines under the new ownership regime.
The acquisition deal, expected to close in Q3 2025, sees the Peña-Roldán family continuing to be involved in the business operations of AAA, ensuring a blend of the promotion’s traditional leadership with WWE’s resources.
