WWE Survivor Series: WarGames ended on a massive cliffhanger Saturday night, leaving fans with more questions than answers regarding the main event’s chaotic conclusion.
In the closing moments of the Men’s WarGames match, a mysterious masked figure entered the cage and delivered a vicious stomp to CM Punk. The interference proved decisive, allowing Bron Breakker to capitalize, pin Punk, and presumably secure his spot as the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship.
While the broadcast ended without a reveal, we now have information on who was under the hood.
According to a report from PWInsider, the person under the mask was none other than Austin Theory.
Paul Heyman Denies Knowledge
During the official post-show press conference airing on ESPN and YouTube, Paul Heyman was directly asked about the identity of the assailant. Heyman insisted he had no prior knowledge of who the masked man was or that the interference was planned.
Based on the backstage reports, Heyman appears to be telling the truth—at least regarding the lack of involvement from Punk’s camp. The attack seems to be the catalyst for a new, high-profile angle involving the former United States Champion.
A Renewed Push for Austin Theory
The involvement of Austin Theory in a main event angle involving CM Punk suggests a significant shift in his creative direction.
In the weeks leading up to Survivor Series, there were strong internal rumors that Theory was slated to join Team Vision, though creative plans ultimately shifted. Theory has been in a transitional phase recently; following the disbanding of his tag team “A-Town Down Under” with Grayson Waller weeks ago, he has been without a clear path.
This interference harkens back to the era when Vince McMahon was still running WWE creative. At that time, Theory was viewed as a future face of the company and was receiving a monstrous singles push. Following the regime change, Theory’s momentum cooled slightly as he moved into the tag division. However, inserting him into a program with CM Punk—and costing Punk a potential title shot—indicates that WWE officials are ready to pull the trigger on another major singles push for the 28-year-old star.
It is currently unclear when WWE plans to officially unmask Theory on television, specifically whether this will occur on the upcoming episode of Monday Night Raw or if the mystery will be drawn out further.
