Indication that a former WWE star is returning to the company

In recent months there has been a lot of speculation that Davey Boy Smith Jr. could be headed back to WWE.

His first run with the company came from 2006-2011 and then went to work for various promotions such as NJPW and MLW. It’s been previously reported that Smith Jr. had interest from several other promotions such as AEW, WWE, All Japan, Impact, and MLW.

This past February, he confirmed in an interview that he’s had talks with WWE and the plan would see him work on the NXT UK brand.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that an indication Smith could sign with WWE is due to him not working the next Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport event.

Meltzer wote, “Smith not being on the Bloodsport show on 4/8 seems like a give away that he’s signed here. We’d been told it was likely some time back.”

Meltzer added that he doesn’t know if AEW has made an offer to Smith. Of course, Jim Ross has been a big supporter of Smith, who did meet with AEW President Tony Khan last year at a party.

Although there has been interest from WWE for a long time now, a hurdle in the way of that happening was him being under contract with MLW. That’s no longer an issue as the deal expired at the end of 2020.

He will induct his father into the 2020 WWE Hall of Fame class, which was taped this week, but won’t air on Peacock until next Tuesday.
