Penelope Ford is facing another setback after suffering an unfortunate injury at the end of February. During an AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship match against The Babes Of Wrath, Ford landed awkwardly following a moonsault to the outside of the ring. The injury forced her to pull out of the match immediately, leaving her partner, Megan Bayne, to finish the contest alone.
Initial reports suggested that the belief within the company was that Ford had suffered an ankle sprain rather than a break, sparking hope for a quick recovery. However, AEW President Tony Khan has since provided a more cautious update on social media. Khan noted that Ford will be “out with an injury maybe for weeks, but possibly even up to months.”
Impact on the Women’s Tag Team Division
The timing of the injury is particularly difficult as Ford and Bayne were in the midst of a significant push within the newly established AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship division. While AEW has kept Ford on television during previous injuries—specifically during an upper-body ailment—it remains to be seen if they will find a non-wrestling role for her while she rehabilitates her ankle.
In her absence, Megan Bayne is expected to continue as a singles competitor or potentially find a temporary partner to maintain her standing in the tag team rankings. Bayne’s performance in the remainder of the match against The Babes Of Wrath was highly regarded, as she managed to hold her own despite the disadvantage. The division, which has seen a surge in competitive matches on Collision and Rampage, will now have to navigate the loss of one of its most established performers.
A History of Resilience
Ford has dealt with a string of injuries over the past few years that have interrupted her momentum on several occasions. Despite these hurdles, she has remained a staple of the AEW women’s roster since the company’s inception. Her “Superbad” persona and high-flying style have made her a fan favorite, though that same athleticism contributed to the awkward landing in Georgia last month.
We wish her a speedy recovery.
