Jade Cargill has broken her silence about the viral moment when her hair came off during a recent WWE match, and she is using it to push back against the reaction.
The incident occurred during a fatal four-way match involving Cargill, Charlotte Flair, Lyra Valkyria, and Sol Ruca, when a superplex from Flair dislodged Cargill’s wig. Speaking on the No Contest Wrestling Podcast, Cargill made clear she has never hidden the fact that she wears one.
“It’s not a secret. I say all the time, I wear a wig,” Cargill said, noting that her hair had been firmly secured. “My wig was sewn on. My hair, like pieces of my hair came out too.”
Cargill pushed back hard on those who labeled the moment a botch, framing the reaction as rooted in ignorance.
“So many women have lost extensions, so many women have had all kinds of malfunctions with their wardrobe, and for some reason they called it a botch. When my hair is a part of my character, what are we calling botches now?” she said. “People are just ignorant and stupid, and they just want to jump on the bandwagon. But hey, that lets me know, good or bad, I always trend.”
Cargill explained that the malfunction actually cost her the match, as she became preoccupied with fixing her hair.
“Charlotte got one over on me, because I was worried about that wig that entire time. But if it wasn’t for that, I would have definitely took that match home,” she said. She credited referee Daphne, who she said understood the situation. “As a black woman, she understood the panic and the mode I was in, and she was just like, ‘It’s on, it’s on.'”
Despite calling it her most embarrassing moment, Cargill said she refused to let it rattle her, and she resisted the urge to simply pull the wig off, noting she did not want to play into a stereotype.
“I still had thread back here, so I couldn’t rip it off, even if I wanted to,” she said. Ultimately, she framed the whole episode as an opportunity. “I’m gonna take that moment, I’m gonna do something really big with it, because the ignorance in wrestling is so loud.”
