Jade Cargill explained what made her fall in love with professional wrestling during an appearance on “Busted Open,” revealing that it was the first athletic endeavor that didn’t come easily to her. The challenge, combined with a love for the pressure and pain, is what drew her into the business.
A New Challenge
Cargill, a standout basketball player, said she was used to being great at everything she tried. Wrestling was different. “Usually, I am just great, whatever I touch,” she said. “Wrestling isn’t something that just happens. It just… It doesn’t.” She recalled her first time learning to roll in the ring: “And I was like, ‘whoa. Like, this is new. Like, yeah, this hurts, but I like the pain.’ And I was like, ‘I’m not good at this. We’ll keep trying.’ Wow, I want to do this.”
Living Off of Hate
This challenge ignited a fire in her, tapping into her desire to overcome obstacles. “I love when people tell me I can’t do something, because I love proving people wrong,” she stated. She explained that she thrives on negativity and uses it as fuel for her own growth. “I live off of hate… I feed off of it like that. I will grow off of hate. I love that more than anything. Love is so fickle, like it’s so fickle, it’s not real.”
A Tough Test from Mark Henry
Host Mark Henry then shared an anecdote from her early training days, revealing he instructed one of her trainers, Rip Rogers, to be extra tough on her to test her resolve. “You know that I told Rip Rogers to hit you real hard,” Henry said. “I wanted to run you off… And I was like, ‘hit her as hard as you can without going to jail.'” When Cargill wasn’t run off by the tough training, Henry said, “I knew you was gonna make it.”
Wanting a Tough Trainer
Cargill confirmed that she not only endured the training but welcomed it. “I’ve worked with some tough trainers that… don’t cut the shit,” she said. “They legit will, like, cut me a new one. Tell me I suck, and that’s what I want… I’m more like the person where it’s like, okay, you think you know me. Let me show you who I am. That’s the type of person I’ve always been.”
