Jake Roberts was involved in a controversial storyline with fellow WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler in the WWE back in 1996. It saw Lawler go after and ridicule Roberts’ issues with alcoholism.
It’s no secret that Roberts has battled demons for the majority of his life. At the SummerSlam pay-per-view event that year, Lawler force-fed Roberts with a bottle of bourbon after a match.
The WWE Hall of Famer spoke with Gary Cassidy of Inside The Ropes for a new interview where he reflected on this storyline. He went off on Vince McMahon and Lawler for exploiting his personal demons.
“Well, I thought it was a horrible thing for McMahon to ask me to do,” said Roberts. “It was cheap, it was disrespectful, it didn’t prove a damn thing other than the fact that Vince McMahon’s an a**hole, so there you go. Lawler, he’s in the same boat. Both a**holes.”
Roberts’ battle with addiction was filmed for a documentary, Resurrection of Jake The Snake, in 2015. Fortunately, Roberts got clean and is now serving as the manager for Lance Archer in AEW.
Roberts also talked about his addition, improving his health and more. Check out the full interview here.
