JBL On Brock Lesnar: “His Character, To Me, Is One Of The Greatest Of All Time”

The wrestling world is still buzzing about the shocking return of Brock Lesnar at the conclusion of WWE SummerSlam, and his friend and fellow WWE Hall of Famer JBL is all for it. JBL praised the surprise as “fantastic” and lauded Lesnar as one of the greatest characters in wrestling history.

A Welcome Surprise

Lesnar’s return, which saw him confront John Cena and Cody Rhodes, was a closely guarded secret. On the Something to Wrestle podcast, JBL explained that in an era of spoilers and behind-the-scenes documentaries like WWE Unreal, pulling off a genuine surprise is the best way to captivate an audience.

“Oh, I think it’s fantastic. And you know, again, the easiest way to work people, Conrad, is when you’re exposing everything. You know, we talk about this every single week. You know, when you’re saying, ‘Oh, this is what we’re doing, this is what you’re doing, unreal.’ That’s the easiest way to work people. Same with Seth Rollins, same with Brock Lesnar, I thought Brock. I love Brock since the day he’s come in the company. He’s a friend. And his character, to me, is one of the greatest of all time.”

A Lesson for the Locker Room

JBL also had high praise for Lesnar’s ability to evolve his look and presentation every time he comes back, noting it’s a lesson that other wrestlers should pay attention to. He then reflected on the classic “Suplex City” match between Lesnar and John Cena from a decade ago.

“He looks absolutely fantastic. The good thing about Brock is Brock doesn’t come back looking like Brock from 2004. Brock always comes back looking a little bit different, and he’s always got a cool look. That’s something that the young guys and old guys out there should take note of… I called the match. I remember at one point I go, ‘Jesus Christ.’ And, you know, of course, they edited it, but it was just the reaction that, like, you’ve got to be kidding me, you’re going to kill this guy. It was fantastic, because no one expected that… It makes sense that Cena would have something to come back to, just that one match that he was so one-sided. This would be a good retribution for it.”
