JBL called Chad Gable’s mask versus mask match in AAA the best match he has ever called for WWE. On the latest episode of Something to Wrestle, he went further than that about the man himself.
“I saw Chad elevate his game down in AAA. Maybe it was The Undertaker talking with him, but I saw Chad just reach a different level.”
Then he revised his own opinion out loud.
“I thought Chad was a terrific worker. I think now he’s a world class worker. I think he might be the best worker in the world. All of a sudden that light went on.”
“The stuff he did down in AAA was just amazing. That guy is a general, man. He’s so freaking good.”
The Undertaker guess is a good one. Gable said on What Do You Wanna Talk About this week that The Undertaker, who leads AAA’s creative team, got something out of him that a long line of coaches had failed to, and described a specific backstage conversation before a ringside brawl as the moment it clicked.
“He gets the credit for pulling something out of me that a number of people have tried to over the years and just haven’t been able to,” Gable said.
The SummerSlam match
Gable challenges Penta for the Intercontinental Championship on Night Two, and JBL is backing him while thinking the champion should be moving up rather than down.
“Penta is fantastic. I mean, absolutely fantastic. I think Chad’s going over in this. I think it’s Chad’s time, and I think they’re going to take Penta and move him up into the main event type of world heavyweight championship level.”
Gable has said he needs a singles championship for his own sake, and revealed on the same podcast that he once swore on television that he would win the Intercontinental Championship, a promise he says has been weighing on him since.
