Jim Ross Compares Vince McMahon Combating WCW to AEW

AEW commentator and co-host of the Grilling JR podcast Jim Ross recently compared the way that Vince McMahon would ‘combat’ WCW to the way that he views the new All Elite Wrestling/AEW promotion in 2020. This week’s episode of Grilling JR focused on the first Clash of Champions event; a show that took place on free television to counter programme the WrestleMania IV PPV. Vince McMahon had run counter programming and PPV events against WCW before this. The Clash was an attempt by WCW to ‘get back’ at the North Eastern based company and to cut into the potential PPV audience of ‘Mania.

“It’s akin to what he’s doing now” – Jim Ross

“Obviously McMahon was very interested in making sure that WCW did not grow” Jim Ross began on this week’s episode of Grilling JR. “It’s akin to what he’s doing now; or attempting to do now with AEW. Just to do what he can to prevent the unbridled growth of the brand.”

“He picked a time where his business was, has somewhat been less interesting to a lot of people”

Jim Ross elaborated further, saying “unfortunately for him [Vince McMahon]. He picked a time where his business was, has somewhat been less interesting to a lot of people. As based on the ratings and so timing for him on this one [AEW] was not real good.”

“Vince McMahon is a great strategist, in that respect back in those days”

JR would finish by saying to his co-host Conrad Thompson; “you’re right on the money there. Just the spirit of competition is the way to go. And the thing about it is that you know that man [Vince McMahon] is a great strategist, in that respect back in those days.”
