Jim Ross: ‘I Am Hanging My Black Hat On GUNTHER’ To Defeat John Cena

Jim Ross has weighed in on the upcoming final match for John Cena, where the 16-time World Champion will face World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER. Cena recently signed a new five-year deal with WWE that will see him transition into an ambassador role, marking this Saturday’s contest as his last official match. Speaking on the Grilling JR podcast, Ross gave his prediction for the high-profile bout.

“I’m hanging my black hat on GUNTHER. I think that’s the right thing to do. He’s going to be around. He’s a key member of the roster….If you didn’t do Lesnar, GUNTHER is a great choice for Cena’s last match, and they’ll have a dandy, no doubt about that.”

Jim Ross Reflects On John Cena’s Place In History

Ross also reflected on Cena’s legacy and where he stands in the pantheon of wrestling greats. “I don’t know if he’ll be known as the greatest of all time to the masses, but he’s certainly one of the small handful of talents that could have that distinction. He got better and better… He worked hard. That’s what happens when you find out that a guy you’re recruiting was the captain of his college football team, was a guy that never missed a practice.”

The legendary commentator, who was head of talent relations when Cena was signed, admitted that the process was fortuitous. “I got lucky on that deal… He just kept getting better, because he’s an athlete, a real, true athlete who wanted to get better and wanted to represent his profession admirably and responsibly.”

Ross ended by noting the backstage atmosphere during Cena’s rise. “He had a lot of pushback, for whatever reason, jealousy was a huge issue that he had to overcome from some of his peers.”
