Jim Ross Says He’s ‘Getting Better Every Day’ Ahead Of Surgery

Jim Ross is in good spirits with his surgery now on the calendar.

The 74-year-old announcer shared on last week’s Grilling JR that he would be undergoing a procedure to address a buildup of fluid on his brain, which his doctors expect to help with the memory and balance problems he has been dealing with. Balance has been the most pressing of those, having led to a number of falls. Ross had spent more than a month in the hospital before returning home.

On this week’s episode, Ross confirmed the operation has been scheduled for August, as F4W/WON reported. He did not give a specific date.

“Yeah, that’s it. I’ll be ready to go,” Ross said when co-host Conrad Thompson brought up the timing.

Asked how it has felt to be back home, Ross said the recovery is moving in the right direction and that he is confident in the plan.

“Great. I’m just getting better every day,” Ross said. “My balance is still a little screwed up, but it’s getting better. So, you know, I’m just happy that I’m alive and I’m happy that I’ve been diagnosed correctly, I think. So let’s get it on.”

Ross is expected to have a short hospital stay after the operation before heading home to recover.

August is also when Ross’ AEW contract is set to expire. There has been no word on an extension. When his deal last came up in the summer of 2025, he signed a one-year extension to continue helping out on commentary at pay-per-view events.

Before then, Ross is still scheduled to appear at WrestleCon in Minneapolis from July 31 to August 2, which was described on Grilling JR as a fingers-crossed situation. Jerry “The King” Lawler, his longtime WWE commentary partner, is also among the guests.
